In which finally paint some 40k Orks...
I’ve always enjoyed Ork stories as they seem quite fun but for whatever reason I’ve never picked them up as models. The new Armageddon box was the perfect opportunity and they were a nice fun project to paint up quickly and really pop on the table!
N.B: If I don’t specify a brand I’m using Citadel paints. You can swap for similar Citadel colours although I do highly recommend the Army Painter tones as they work out of the pot and are used in the Marine Juice recipe.
Priming - Under Shading
I’ve been reading a bit of art/colour theory recently and enjoying playing around with under shading. I wanted a quick project and this sets everything up nicely:
Under coat with Colour Forge Rogue Pink spray
Zenithal highlight with Colour Forge Matt White spray*
Pink is an excellent under shade for yellow and the zenithal gives natural shading. The pink also gives a bit more life to the green of Ork skin.
White over pink under coat gives an excellent base for painting yellow
*You can use any white or beige
How To
Paint all the armour plates with Imperial Fist Contrast. (This is probably the one point where I would specifically recommend this version of the paint as it has good coverage and transparency giving a great effect)
Paint all the skin with either Orruk Flesh Contrast or a 50/50 mix of Orruk Flesh and Dark Angels Green Contrasts
Paint all the leather items with the following Contrast paints, alternating on each model:
Skeleton Horde
Gore Grunta Fur
Gagrak’s Sewer
Black Templar
Paint any bone parts with Skeleton Horde too
Paint any wood with Wyldwood Contrast
Paint the lips with Volpus Pink contrast
Paint goggle lenses with Space Wolves Grey Contrast
Paint the squigs in a variety of Flesh Tearers Red and Baal Red Contrast
Paint the tops of the stikkbombs in Militarum Green Contrast
Paint any light metal with Darkstar Pewter
Paint any dark metal with Darkstar Blue Steel
Paint any weapon casing with Darkstar Copper
Wash everything with Sonic Sledgehammer’s Marine Juice**
Paint the base with Mournfang Brown
At this point the model is ready for the tabletop, to push it further follow the steps below
Paint eyes with any mid yellow layer paint
Edge highlight the steel metallics with Runefang Steel
Edge highlight the copper with Canoptek Alloy
Edge highlight the armour with Yriel Yellow
Thin down some dark navy blue or black paint and free-hand triangles/flames/moons onto the armour platers
Use a suitable basing material such as Pro Acryl’s Golden Earth
Wash it in random patches with Agrax Earthshade and Seraphim Sepia
Drybrush it with any light bone colour
**I played around with doing a green wash on the skin but the brown tone of Marine Juice makes the pink undercoat pop more
This is a relatively speedy way to get some lovely sculpts onto the tabletop. I am looking forward to finally getting to play with the new Codex and might have to pick up a Nazdreg….
